It begins after the Isha prayer and can continue until dawn. Correct execution requires attention to the steps and following the Imam in congregation.

A. The Prayer Method Step by Step

After the Isha prayer and a short interval, the Imam steps forward and begins Taraweeh with the Takbir (Allahu akbar). The worshippers follow him in every movement: standing, bowing (ruku’), prostrating (sujud), and sitting position. After every two rak’at, the Imam concludes with the greeting of peace (salam) to the right and left.

B. What Are the Resting Pauses Between Units?

After every four rak’at (i.e., after two salams), a short pause is observed, called Tarwiha. During this pause, worshippers can make supplications, glorify Allah (tasbih), or rest quietly. These pauses give Taraweeh its name and help gather strength for the remaining units.

C. How Is the Entire Quran Recited During Taraweeh?

Many mosques follow the tradition of completing the entire Quran during Taraweeh throughout Ramadan (Khatm al-Quran). The Imam divides the Quran into 30 approximately equal parts (juz’) and recites one part each night. This allows worshippers to hear the entire Quran within one month—a special opportunity for spiritual reflection and connection.

School of Thought

Number of Rak’at

Main Argument

Hanafi

20 rak’at

Practice of Umar and the companions in Medina

Maliki

36 or 20 rak’at

Adaptation to the Medinan tradition

Shafi’i

20 rak’at

Consensus of scholars after the companions’ era

Hanbali

20 rak’at

Narration from Ahmad ibn Hanbal

Some Scholars

8 rak’at

Following the practice of the Prophet ﷺ

2. How Many Rak’at Does the Taraweeh Prayer Have?

The number of rak’at in Taraweeh prayer is a frequently asked question, as it varies in different mosques. Essentially, there are two widespread narrations: eight or twenty rak’at, both based on the practice of the Prophet’s ﷺ companions. Both numbers are legally valid and considered Sunnah.

A. The Common Number: 8 or 20 Rak’at?

The majority of mosques worldwide follow the number of 20 rak’at, as it originates from Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab’s instruction and was unanimously accepted by the companions. The narration of 8 rak’at is based on the Prophet’s ﷺ practice, though he did not pray it regularly in congregation out of concern it might become obligatory. Both numbers are permissible.

B. Why Does the Number Vary Between Mosques?

The differences stem from various narrations and interpretations by legal scholars. Some mosques choose a shorter number due to space constraints or to avoid overburdening the congregation. Other mosques maintain the longer tradition to include more Quranic recitation. What matters is that all variants have their valid basis.

C. Is There a Fixed Number That Cannot Be Exceeded?

No, there is no fixed upper limit. Some companions and early scholars prayed even more than 20 rak’at to spend the night in worship. What counts is the quality of the prayer and inner devotion, not merely the quantity. Those wishing to pray more can add voluntary prayers after Taraweeh.

3. What Is the Taraweeh Prayer in Simple Terms?

Taraweeh is the nightly Ramadan prayer that Muslims perform after the evening prayer to draw closer to Allah and hear the Quran. It is not obligatory but a strongly emphasized Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, associated with immense rewards.

A. Definition of Taraweeh Prayer

Linguistically, “Taraweeh” derives from “Tarwiha,” meaning “resting pause.” Technically, it refers to the prayers performed during Ramadan nights, which can be prayed in congregation or individually. It is part of Qiyam al-Layl (night prayer) and ranks among the most excellent deeds in Ramadan.

B. Why Is It Called Taraweeh?

The name comes from the resting breaks taken after every four rak’at. During these pauses, worshippers can regain strength, make supplications, or praise the Imam. This practice made congregational prayer more manageable and enabled longer nights of devotion.

C. When Did the Prophet ﷺ First Pray It?

The Prophet ﷺ prayed Taraweeh in congregation at the mosque, but only for a few nights, fearing it might become obligatory. He said: “I feared that it might be made obligatory upon you.” After his passing, Umar ibn al-Khattab gathered the Muslims again behind one Imam, reviving this Sunnah.

4. When Does Taraweeh Time Begin and End?

The time for Taraweeh prayer begins immediately after the Isha prayer and lasts until the break of dawn (Fajr). Within this window, the prayer can be performed at any time, though the first part of the night after Isha is preferred.

A. Beginning After Isha Prayer

Taraweeh is only performed after the obligatory Isha prayer. It is not permissible to pray it beforehand. In practice, a short pause follows Isha, then the Imam begins Taraweeh. Those who pray Isha at the mosque can directly join the Taraweeh.

B. End Before Dawn

The time ends with the onset of dawn. Those praying the last rak’at before Fajr should ensure that the Witr prayer (odd-numbered) is completed before dawn. Most mosques conclude Taraweeh about an hour before Suhur.

C. Can Taraweeh Be Prayed After Suhur?

No, after dawn, Taraweeh is no longer valid. Those who wake in the last part of the night can instead pray Tahajjud, which also belongs to Qiyam al-Layl. Taraweeh is specifically tied to the time after Isha.

5. Is Taraweeh Obligatory or Sunnah?

According to unanimous scholarly consensus, Taraweeh prayer is not obligatory (fard) but a strongly emphasized Sunnah (Sunnah mu’akkadah). The Prophet ﷺ encouraged it without making it compulsory. Those who perform it receive great reward, while those who omit it commit no sin.

A. Legal Rulings in the Four Schools of Thought

All four schools of thought (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i, Hanbali) classify Taraweeh as Sunnah. Imam Abu Hanifa stated: “Taraweeh is a confirmed Sunnah, and omitting it is disliked but not sinful.” Imam Malik emphasized the communal practice in Medina as its foundation. The Shafi’i and Hanbali schools consider it individually recommended.

B. Difference Between Taraweeh, Qiyam, and Tahajjud

Qiyam al-Layl is the overarching term for all night prayers. Taraweeh refers specifically to Qiyam during Ramadan after Isha. Tahajjud is the prayer in the last part of the night after sleeping. Both are voluntary, though Tahajjud is considered higher in rank due to being performed in the stillness of the night.

C. What If Someone Deliberately Leaves It?

Since it is not obligatory, there is no sin in omitting it. However, the person misses a great reward and the opportunity to spend Ramadan nights in worship. Scholars strongly recommend performing it, especially in congregation.

Study Islamic knowledge with Denk Arabisch Academy

Deepen your understanding of Islam through authentic and structured learning

           Join now

6. Praying on the Night of Power

The Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr) is better than a thousand months. What Does the Imam Recite During Taraweeh?

The recitation in Taraweeh is longer than in obligatory prayers. The Imam selects passages from the Quran, typically following the order of surahs, to complete the entire Quran during the month.

A. Daily Recitation of One Juz’

In most mosques, one juz’ (approximately 20 pages) is recited each day, so the Quran is completed by the end of Ramadan. The Imam begins with the first surah and progresses through to the last. This allows worshippers to become familiar with the entire Quran.

B. Short Surahs in the Final Rak’at

In the last rak’at of Taraweeh, especially after mid-Ramadan, Imams often recite shorter surahs to avoid overburdening the congregation. This gives worshippers the opportunity to hear familiar passages and prepare for the Witr prayer.

C. Must I Complete the Entire Quran with the Imam?

It is not obligatory but highly recommended. Those who cannot stay the entire night may leave early. However, hearing the complete Quran is a great blessing, and many Muslims strive to stay longer, especially on weekends.

8. Is Taraweeh Prayed in Congregation or Individually?

Taraweeh can be performed both in congregation and individually. However, praying in congregation at the mosque is preferable as it strengthens Muslim unity and multiplies the reward.

A. Virtue of Congregation at the Mosque

The Prophet ﷺ prayed Taraweeh in congregation and said: “Whoever prays with the Imam until he leaves, it will be recorded as if he spent the whole night in prayer.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi). Congregation unites hearts and creates a special atmosphere of devotion.

B. Ruling on Praying at Home

Praying at home is also valid and may be a relief for women, the sick, or those with long distances. However, those who pray at home should maintain the same care and concentration as in the mosque.

C. What If I Miss Some Rak’at Behind the Imam?

Those who arrive late to the mosque pray whatever they catch of Taraweeh and complete the missed rak’at after the Imam’s salam. It is also permissible to pray Witr with the Imam even if parts of Taraweeh were missed.

9. What Is the Difference Between Taraweeh and Tahajjud?

Many Muslims confuse Taraweeh with Tahajjud. Both are night prayers, but they differ in timing and purpose.

A. Timing of Both Prayers

Taraweeh is prayed after Isha in the first part of the night, while Tahajjud is performed in the last part of the night after sleeping. Tahajjud is the prayer of those who rise to call upon Allah in the stillness of the night.

B. Number of Rak’at and Method

Taraweeh has a structured format with resting pauses and is often prayed in congregation. Tahajjud is performed individually, with any number of rak’at, usually two or four, ending with Witr. Both can be combined.

C. Are They Two Separate Prayers or One?

They are two distinct prayers with different times and intentions. Those who pray Taraweeh in the early night and wake later may add Tahajjud. Witr is prayed only once during the night, either at the end of Taraweeh or after Tahajjud.

10. What to Do When Feeling Tired During Taraweeh?

Fatigue is a common challenge, especially in the second half of Ramadan. Islamic law provides relief to preserve the quality of prayer.

A. Sitting and Resting

Those who become tired while standing may sit during prayer and continue recitation while seated. Short breaks between rak’at are also permissible. The Prophet ﷺ said: “When one of you becomes tired, let him sit.” (Narrated by Abu Dawud).

B. Reducing the Number of Rak’at

It is better to pray fewer rak’at with concentration than many with heedlessness. Those exhausted may pray only eight or ten rak’at and then go home. Intention and devotion matter more than quantity.

C. Praying Part with the Imam Then Leaving

Many mosques offer Taraweeh in segments. One can pray the first rak’at with the Imam and then leave when fatigue overwhelms.
